Kennel Cough in Melbourne - What we're doing to keep pups safe!

Kennel Cough Advisory
We’ve recently been made aware of an increase in Kennel Cough cases in Melbourne. At Uncanny Animals, we want to keep you informed about the signs, symptoms, transmission, and how we can all help prevent the spread.
What is Kennel Cough?
Kennel Cough is a highly contagious respiratory illness in dogs, caused by bacteria (such as Bordetella bronchiseptica) and/or viruses (such as Canine Influenza). Dogs can be infected by multiple pathogens at once, and the illness is easily spread—especially in areas where dogs gather.
Common Symptoms
-
Persistent dry, hacking cough (may sound like a “honk”)
-
Wheezing or gagging
-
Runny nose and/or frequent sneezing
-
Loss of appetite
-
Mild fever
-
Lethargy or decreased energy
How It Spreads
Kennel Cough is transmitted through:
-
Airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing
-
Direct contact with an infected dog
-
Contact with contaminated surfaces (e.g., bowls, leashes, balls)
Important: Dogs can be contagious before showing symptoms, making outbreaks difficult to contain. Canine Influenza viruses, in particular, can also survive on surfaces for up to 48 hours.
How to Help Reduce the Spread
-
Consult with your vet
-
Avoid areas where dogs aren’t vetted/congregate during known outbreaks
-
Keep sick dogs indoors, especially during colder weather
-
Allow your pet plenty of rest
-
Feed a complete and balanced diet to support immunity
What We’re Doing at Uncanny Animals
Your dog’s health and safety are our top priorities. We follow rigorous hygiene protocols year-round (for this very reason!) Some of these practices include:
-
Sanitising between every client: We use high-grade disinfectants such as H-42 Virucidal Anti-Bacterial Cleaner (an agent that deactivates and destroys viruses, particularly on blades) and F10 SC Veterinary Disinfectant (bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal, sporicidal disinfectant used in Veterinary practises.)
-
One towel per dog: Each pet receives a fresh, clean towel to prevent cross-contamination.
-
No dog-to-dog interaction: We’re a grooming salon—not a daycare—so dogs do not interact with each other during their visits. This helps reduce stress and significantly and makes for a more relaxed grooming experience, but also limits the risk of spreading contagions.
What We Ask From You
To help us maintain a safe environment for all pets, please:
-
Keep dogs with any symptoms at home
-
No mingling of dogs in the reception - no “meeting” other pets or coming in contact. If the area is quite full (usually the 8am appointments and lunchtime appointments) please wait outside until other’s leave to reduce congestion.
-
Ensure all dogs are leashed at all times for safe distancing
Thank you for working with us to help keep every pet happy, healthy, and safe. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out.
